Calendar Image - February 2026

This photo was taken by Richard Harri, aka richardthekayaker. It is incredibly rare to see a Moonbow let alone capture it as a photograph. I took this picture en route from Rangitoto to Browns Island during the Super Blue Moon in August 2024. A Moonbow is the same phenomenon as the rainbow but instead of being lit by the sun it is lit by moonlight. They are so rare because a number of conditions need to be met, the brightness of the moon, the angle of the light, the requirement for rain. What makes this even more rare is that being taken on a kayak if the sea had been just a tiny bit rougher the photo would have had motion blur given the need to hold the aperture open longer to capture more light due to the darkness of the shot. I am so happy to have captured this and be able to show you this beauty not often seen.
